Four Pillars guide · updated October 13, 2026
Can you read BaZi without a birth time?
You can calculate a partial chart from a birth date and the relevant time zone. The hour pillar stays unknown. A solar-year or solar-month boundary on that date can also leave another pillar uncertain, and a late-night birth can change the day pillar under the convention our calculator uses.
Choose “I don't know” in the free form rather than invent a time. The calculation uses a noon placeholder where needed, but it is not a recovered birth time. A partial chart is useful for exploring the tradition, not for claiming the missing information has been found.
What do the four pillars mean?
BaZi means “eight characters”: a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch for each of four positions. The year gives the familiar zodiac animal. The month follows solar terms, not a Gregorian month number. The day supplies the Day Master, the stem at the center of an interpretation. The hour needs a birth time and uses two-hour branches. These are traditional symbolic categories, not measures of personality established by science.
Which parts remain usable?
- Year: usually determined by the date, but uncertain if Li Chun occurs during that local date.
- Month: usually determined, but uncertain if a month-changing solar term occurs that day.
- Day and Day Master: shown using the supplied date and the day-rule assumption below.
- Hour: omitted, not guessed. Any interpretation that needs that branch is incomplete.
A real calculation with a fictional birth
Example: July 14, 1986, time unknown, Asia/Hong_Kong. For the illustration we supply Hong Kong's time zone and longitude, 114.17° east. The engine uses noon as the placeholder and standard local time as its default basis.
- Year pillar
- Yang Fire Tiger (bing-yin)
- Month pillar
- Yin Wood Goat (yi-wei)
- Day pillar
- Yin Earth Goat (ji-wei)
- Hour pillar
- Hour pillar: not calculated
Day Master: Yin Earth. This result has no hour pillar. It is an illustration of what the engine returns, not a personal reading or a statement about a real person's life.
What happens on a solar-boundary birthday?
Example: February 4, 2027, time unknown, Asia/Hong_Kong. The engine flags the year and month pillars as uncertain because Li Chun falls within that local day. A noon-based displayed value cannot tell which side of that instant a real birth belongs to.
In the live quiz, an unknown birth time skips the birthplace question and uses the browser's time zone. If you were born in another zone, or near a solar boundary, that default needs checking; this partial result should not be treated as exact. The free result includes a boundary note when the engine detects one.
The 11 PM day rule matters
Our default uses standard local time, with daylight saving removed where applicable, and starts the next day's pillar at 23:00 (11 PM). With time unknown, the day pillar assumes a birth before 11 PM on the supplied date. If you might have been born in the last hour under that time basis, the next day's Day Master could apply. Other calculators may use a midnight day boundary or a different time basis. Those settings can explain a difference.
The “uncertain” year/month flags do not exhaust every unknown-hour possibility: they do not prove the assumed day pillar is correct. Likewise, choosing a two-hour window supplies a representative time; it is not the same as a recorded exact minute near a boundary.
How to use a partial chart carefully
- Check your birth date, including the calendar it was recorded in.
- Use a recorded birth time if you later find one; do not replace “unknown” with a guess presented as fact.
- Compare the time zone, day boundary and solar/lunar-year convention before comparing calculators.
- Treat a reading as entertainment and self-reflection, with the missing hour and any boundary uncertainty kept in view.
A compatibility report or annual interpretation cannot turn missing birth information into certainty. The chart does not replace medical, financial or other professional advice or decide an important life choice.

No email is required to see the chart. A full 2027 reading is optional and costs $37; it still uses the same birth details and conventions. Buying it does not fill in an unknown hour.
